If today's fitness scene thrives on a hatred of animalized fatness, Solo Leveling shares the same affective foundation in that the “demon” invokes the contemptible animal and contrasts it with the hunter's superhuman ability to control and subdue it. Solo Leveling proves that the biopolitics of the 21st century is also the zoopolitics, and that the present of biopolitics is inseparable from the history of zoopolitics as the affective foundation of the work. The Hunter, represented by Sung Jin-woo, performs the domestication of animals and the racialization of livestock by killing demons in dungeons and turning them into enslaved soldiers. The settings of “shadow extraction” that make this possible mediate the biopolitics of racialization and the zoopolitics of the slaughterhouse. Through this medium, the optimism of “leveling up” emerges. This optimism is based on predatory affect, which is not only cruel to the subject, but also to the subject's treatment of others.
